You should never use cotton buds to clean inside the ear as they just push the wax further inwards. It is much better to use special sprays or drops to keep the entry to the ear canal properly clean. A system of tiny hair-like cells will cause any ear-wax to be expelled and to settle on the auricle, where it can then be safely removed using cotton buds instead of cotton wool or sterile gauze.
